Strategy for raised RPM for oil level check

Postby parsonsj on Sat Apr 29, 2023 12:52 am

My M150-controlled Radical SR8 uses a multi-stage dry sump for oil control. To check the oil level requires one to run the engine at 4000 rpm for 5 seconds to have the scavenge pumps pull oil out of the engine and deposit it into the tank.

Doing that at the track is a hassle, since it's difficult to get in the car, and only racing shoes can fit the pedals. Most times I do it in stocking feet. I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas about how to do that externally (without having to push the throttle manually). I've got 3 three rotary switches with unused positions, along with other buttons, etc.

Changing idle speed or messing with the throttle pedal map seems like the obvious way to go, but I'm wondering if there's a better idea out there?

Thanks!

Is it throttle by wire?
Have pretend air con and use that to set a temporary raised idle speed via a switch in the engine bay?

Yes, it's throttle by wire. I'll have a look at the A/C controls, thanks.

A/C controls won't work. I need a bump of about 2700 rpm, and the A/C bump is limited to 1000 rpm. That would have worked nicely though.

Changing the throttle translation table works fine. I just set the 0 point to 5% throttle through the 4000 rpm, and then back to 0 beginning at 5000 rpm (my throttle is indexed by RPM). I run at position 2 in the paddock, position 3 on track, position 4 for checking oil level, and position 7 for throttle testing.

Sweet!

The only other idea I came up with was to rig a switch and resistor to the Engine coolant sensor so you get minus something ridiculous and then set the idle aim table accordingly. Unfortunately that only seems to get you to 3000rpm. Could possibly then combine with the fake Air Con idea.

Your workaround sounds better.

Great solution! I would have used a broomstick. to mash the throttle.

Thanks David. It does work pretty well. I have tried manipulating the throttle pedal with a jack handle in the past, but getting 4000 rpm without getting 8000 was difficult.
