Splicing the RS232

Discussion and support for MoTeC's earlier generation ECUs

Splicing the RS232

Postby Andrew C on Tue May 22, 2012 7:11 am

I am looking for options for my M48 to AIM Pista connection. Spoke to Motec and we agree that I can use my current ECU Download cable to supply the AIM, and disconnect from Aim and use the laptop when needed. Here is my question. Can RS232 support a splice? I have a few serial harnesses, and would like to use the leads out of the Aim and splice them into the serial which will plug into my ECU download/Upload harness.

Splicing for example a GPS RS232 output between an ECU and MoTeC dash is possible and works fine. So it may be possible.

I have used the Y-connectors for RS232 and they work fine for testing.
A proper splice would be better, or you would want to locktite those the little screws and stand offs as they will surely come unstuck at the worst possible time.

You have to be a bit careful here. The communications from the M48 to the AIM is different to the M48 to the laptop. The splice will work you just have to understand that the communications to the AIM dash will stop whenever the M48 is connected to the laptop and the ECU Manager software is being used. It should not cause any problems.

Return to M4 and M48 ECUs (including M2R and MLS variants)
