Multiple PDMs Controlled by Same Motec Switchpad via CAN

Postby Herrubermensch on Thu May 10, 2012 3:36 pm

I am running two Motec PDM16s and a Motec Racegrade switchpad connected through the Motec gateway. I want to use my switchpad to control some outputs on each PDM, as one is in the trunk and one is under the hood, via CAN. Is this possible (it should be in principle), and assuming it is, how do I distinguish between the two different PDMs in PDM manager when assigning inputs? Is there a scheme such as there is for running multiple switpads?

Please let me know. Thanks.

As mentioned before, you appear to have a Racegrade switchpad.

This item is not in any way a MoTeC product and as such we have no knowledge of it, or how it works.

You could use the same message (0X118 for example) and transmit a selection of bits to both PDM's.

You could for example, have the first 4 bits be for PDM 1 and the second 4 bits for PDM 2.

Each PDM will recieve all 8 Bits, but the first PDM could be configured to look at only the first 4, the second PDM look at the next 4.

You could also transmit from the keypad product (depending on how it works) one message on one id (0x118) and another message on (0x119) and each pdm look for its individual id.

As we have no knowledge of the switchpad you are using, I have no idea if either of these options is possible.

Just to wrap up this thread, the answer is that one absolutely can control multiple PDMs from the same Racegrade switchpad because each configuration file is pdm-serial-number-specific and each button on the switchpad has a unique message ID and bit-offset combination. One also can, btw, control multiple outputs on different PDMs from the same button on the switchpad (e.g., front and rear running or parking lights). I just concluded a two PDM/two Racegrade switchpad installation if anyone has any questions. So far, very impressed with the Motec PDMs and the Racegrade switchpads.
