SDL to M800 Setup

I have an SDL Dash configured with an M800. Both are reading their own sensors properly in their own software managers but I have a couple of problems that I'm hoping someone can help with:

1. I have setup the M800 to send over a custom set of channels on CAN 1 (Data set 12) on address 1520.

These come up on the Display just fine while the Laptop is plugged in but they revert to zero's when the laptop is disconnected.

Could this be due to not having the display switch buttons configured (i.e Dash Mode, Next/Previous Line)? I have used the switch channels for a handlebar TC Trim switch and have configured all displays modes with the same information - which assumes I don't need any switches anyway as all modes are the same.

2. I cannot get the SDL the send the front and rear suspension channels back to the M800 as the SDL doesn't have any configurable channel sending option.

I have been speaking to other Motec Analysts who have attempted to talk me through configuring a profile in SDL3 Manager and then importing this profile into SDL but I'm not having much luck. It all seems hit and miss when talking to someone with a vague recollection of exactly how to do a workaround on an old dash.

Does anyone have a step by step guide on exactly how to do this?

I am guessing that you dont have a terminating resistor in your CAN loom.

By placing the UTC on the CAN bus, you will effectively be adding a Term resistor to your loom, making the CAN bus complete.

try disconnecting the laptop, but leaving the UTC connected in the car, and I think that you will find that it still works.

Sending back to the ECU in an SDL is quite difficult. First thing, lets get the M800 to SDL transmission working correctly. (do you have an SDL or an SDL3? you mention both in your post)

Maybe send us your dash and M800 configs, and we can look at what you are doing.

I'll take a look at adding that Resistor.

I have an SDL Dash, but I have been told to create a channel send profile in SDL3 Manager that I can then import into SDL.

I've had a go at this but no joy - I will upload the files for you to look at when I get to work in the morning.

I think there was a post about this somewhere else, but let me add this here, too.

The SDL interface software does not include any ability to send or receive custom datasets via CAN. However, if you configure a custom transmission set in the ADL2, ADL3, ACL or SDL3 manager, you can save that dataset and then import it in the SDL comms interface.

Here are the steps to do this.

Save template
1. Create a new (or choose an exisiting) configuration in the ADL2, ADL3, ACL or SDL3 manager
2. Select the Comms interface (Inputs --> Communications)
3. Click on a CAN channel and select advanced
4. Edit the CAN transmission set (you may have to create the proper channels you want to transmit in the dash manager first)
5. After setting up the transmission set, select save as and save the file in the SDL comms folder (e.g., Motec/Dash/Sport Dash manager 1.6/Comms Setup for the dash manager 1.6)

Import template
6. Open the your configuration file in the SDL manager
7. Select the Comms interface (Inputs --> Communications)
8. Choose the appropriate CAN channel and press "Select" Your new CAN template will be available.
