If all you want is a basic ref/sync signal you can generate a suitable output form a parallel port (printer) if you have a computer that still has one. I do this on a desktop computer for my injector flow bench.

I am a bit of a Luddite, most of the computers here have a parallel and true serial port, please tell me more, thanks!

If you search google for "signalgen.zip" you will find the parallel port program on another ECU manufacturers site. There are also other applications where you generate a audio file and use this to trigger your ECU through your PC soundcard/speaker: http://www.megamanual.com/router/crankwheelpulser.htm
