The Rockwell test is a hardness test. The procedure consists of an extremely hard tip (diamond I would imagine) being loaded onto the test piece (cylinder head in this case) The ammount the tip goes in basically determines how hard the test piece is. This will leave a small dot like a centre punch mark in your material. BE CAREFUL. Obviously there are standards to the force that is implied and the machines must be calibrated.
