ok, thanks for your help, the motor has survived and appears to be fine, the only change has been the ignition module.

Hello,

I would recommend performing a Rockwell test in this area on the head. I say this as heat does not dissipate very well in that particular area. We find heads become extremely soft especially after prolonged use or an overheat. Compare the area to that of a position completely away from the combustion chamber. Usually brinelling is present if they are soft. You will be very surprised. I hope this helps. Chevs are real common for in in the centre two cylinders on each bank.

The Rockwell test is a hardness test. The procedure consists of an extremely hard tip (diamond I would imagine) being loaded onto the test piece (cylinder head in this case) The ammount the tip goes in basically determines how hard the test piece is. This will leave a small dot like a centre punch mark in your material. BE CAREFUL. Obviously there are standards to the force that is implied and the machines must be calibrated. There are three common scales used. A, B and C scale. C is primarily used for metals. Most good engineering companies will have one
