Wiring loom splicing question

Postby Chris Wilson on Sat Sep 17, 2011 11:23 pm

Let's say I am trying to take a wire from the ecu sensor 5 volt supply out to six sensors. How would the pros splice 5 branches off the main conductor, all from one place (bulky, and how to splice 5 conductors to one main one?) or several branches spaced according to sensor position along the main conductor. Do you, in the latter instance, cut the main conductor at every branch, or carefully trim back insulation and use tiny open sided C crimps like the OE automotive looms on Jap cars seem to do? Where can you buy the little open sided C crimps and a suitable crimp tool? Thanks.

A webinar on wiring loom tricks and tips might be a useful future topic?

If you are looking to do a 5 wire splice that can get a little bulky, I have switched to exclusively using tefzel wire as it is much smaller and more manageable for this reason.
Having said that normal procedure would be to strip the parent wire then C crimp he other 5 to the main wire. It's always best to use some adhesive heat shrink to provide some strain relief. It takes a few times to get the hang of it but after that it's normally not to difficult ( unless you trying to do it laying upside down under the dash ).
I normally use one of motec's supplied C crimp's as it holds the wire AND the unstripped wires slightly further up to help with strain relief.
I would also love to see a webinar with some video footage of best practice for wiring as this is where a lot of problems can occur.

Thanks 20B, I didn't know Motec supplied C clips, I have found Motec USA have a broader product range than Motec UK, have you got a link to them please?

Not really related to loom splicing but seems a good time to mention it:

Some tidbits in here 2/3 of the way through:

Some extras on here like chassis clips and boots:

There was another that I down loaded, but I cannot find the link.
