GPS units MoTeC is 5htz whilst others are 20htz

Hi Guys,

I am looking at getting equipment that can accurately measure lap times, braking, accelerating points etc etc. These include v-box, recorder kits (chase cam), VCS (MoTeC), race recall etc.

Now most of these units have atleast a 10-20htz GPS unit whilst the MoTeC GPS unit is only 5htz.

I do recall MoTeC offereing 10 and 20 units. Is there a reason why they have stuck with 5 htz??

As a follow on, in the webinar where you discuss things to do with a GPS and an ecu ( ) the ecu set up for GPS shows a figure of 2 for the number of satellites. Why just two, wouldn't using as many satellites as the unit can see and process be better for resolution? Thanks.

We sell a 5hz, and used to sell 10hz and 20hz units. The supplier of the 10hz and 20hz units stopped making them, so we couldnt get them any more. We looked at other options in 10hz and 20hz GPS units, but they were too expensive to consider selling. So se stuck with the 5hz. The accuracy is good, and it is reasonably inexpensive.

Keep in mind that our supplied 5hz GPS is $295 AUD, most of the 10hz and 20hz units are significantly more expensive than this.

You shoud also determine if the unit in comparison is a genuine 20hz, or 5hz gps that is then estimated up to 20hz using a G sensor or alike.

We have a new 10hz GPS that we are soon to make available, and it is reasonably inexpensive.

295 Australian Dollars??? Hell, no wonder everyone tells me I am mad buying Motec stuff, the 5Hz GPS module over here in the UK is 320 British Pounds, which convert back to 483 Australian Dollars. Then we have 20% value added tax to pay on top, so a grand total of over 580 Australian Dollars!! It would pay me to take a cheap flight and buy any really high end Motec stuff over there in Oz, have a break, and fly back with it

Yeh, some stuff is actually cheaper there than here, and some stuff is the other way around. It depends where it is sourced from, and what deal was done with the supplier.
We have actually found with some bosch items, we cannot even buy them directly from bosch as cheap as others are selling them for retail!

World wide pricing is difficult to get even and fair for all.

Yep, suppose so Jamie, annoying though, to see some of the price variations, not just Motec stuff, but generally. Ebay is sometimes a great leveller, for some products, but it has its risks, for sure

Just wondering as I plan to purchase it or the 5hz depending on the compatibility.
