frankenferrari V12

Postby mk e on Tue May 03, 2011 6:30 am

Several years ago I had the (very bad) idea to make some changes to my 308. The idea was to remove the 550 hp 3.0 liter V8 I had built and install a 550-600hp V12….which it turns out was much easier said than done.

I wanted the car to stay period correct which meant picking an engine that was available in 1984 so I got myself a 4.8 liter 400i engine…but that’s a 2 valve engine. My car is a 308 quatrovalve (4 valve) so it just seemed wrong to install a 2Vengine. The Testarossa came out in 1984 and had 4V heads, but that’s a flat 12. So I decided the “right” thing to do would be to force fit the TR heads onto the 400 block and then force fit that engine onto the 308 transaxles (which is also the oil pan BTW).

That was 3 years ago and after quite a list of set-backs and about 15-20 lbs of aluminum welding rod I think I’m getting close. All the “castings” fit together and I’ve started the finish machining.

There was a bit of scope creep along the way so it’s now a 5.5 liter, it’s got 12 ducatic 999 throttle bodies V with show injectors (if I have low power issues I left room for low mount injectors and can run a hi-low set-up) which meant raising the intake ports 20 degree to make everything fit in the tight 60 degree, billet cams (the 400 and TR had different firing orders so I need to make cams that fit the TR heads but had the 400 timing, oh and would work with the 400 timing chain instead of the TR timing belt). The exhaust is 12-4-2 SS headers flowing out a pair of 3” pipes. I’m thinking should make right around 800hp at 9000 rpm when it comes to life (hopefully) next year.

I’ve got an M800 with ignition expander for it so it will be sequential fuel with waste spark….unless I decide to add 12 more injectors then it will have 2 M800s I guess.

What you call a "very bad" idea is your passion. Looking good and keep at it, nothing that really means something to you ever comes easy.

Some time has gone by but I'm still working on it....and it's ALMOST done!

The simulator (dynomation5) is not predicting 948hp. The engine went in the car for real a couple months ago so I can do all the normal engine swap stuff like exhaust, coolant, and of course an ECU.

ECU time is nearly here I think!

The M800 stuff I had on the shelf went on ebay last year and was replaced with an M150 with the GPR package which seems to mostly do what I want. Pretty nice....strange package limits on basic stuff while providing so pretty advanced stuff but nice other than that.

The setup is
12 ducati TBs with a BMW throttle actuator and porshe cable operated throttle pedal position sensor for DBW
12 Injector dynamics ID1000 injectors targeting a 35% duty cycle
12 LS-2 coils - I'm trying accel 5mm wires because they fit neatly between the cams...we'll see how that works.
12 bosch NB O2 sensors on the header tubes so I'll KNOW the TB are properly sync'd
2 innovative WBO2 in the main collectors - its 6-2-1 setup on each bank
4 wheel speeds, hall sensor on a 30 tooth chopper

the ECU isn't real happy about 14 O2 sensors none of which are using an LTC so the 12 NB are on EGT channels and the 2 WB are on the oil pres & oil Temp channels because they are in the basic logging package. Strange but it should be functional other than no closed loop option.....we'll find out in a month or 2.

I'm trying the dash coolant temp gauge hook up to the channel for coolant fan2 to see if I can get the gauge to read the temp from the ECU.

I've got exhaust by-pass valves going on an aux output thinking I can keep it quiet below about 300hp

I'm going to try using another aux out in to control fuel pump speed

Then 1 more aux out for switching valves in the airbox, when I actually build the air box...I want to see exactly what the engine is doing before trying add additional stuff to the mix i think.

Time to order lots and lot of wire :)

I am having enough trouble getting a V6 to replace an inline 4 in my kit.....you have my deepest admiration. Superb work.

Oh, there was some problems.....but between the sawzall and welder I THINK I got them sorted I think :)

Here's the trans/engine sump casing

18 or 28 head studs were in unusable locations.

When I finally got the heads to bolt on the block the ports pointed at each other with no way to get a decent manifold on it....hmmmm.....just so move the port!

The the timing chain cover didn't fit with the TR heads...more cutting and welding.

then the bellhousing.....more cutting and welding

Drop gears....more cutting.

It just went on and on for almost 8 years now!

This was just a really bad idea.
