Audi/VW ref/sync

Postby Scott@FP on Wed Mar 23, 2011 9:20 am

Have a hybrid sort of Audi here, appears to have a 60-2 Hall ref and a Hall 4 slot sync with two long teeth followed by two short teeth, is OEM mode 59 correct? Is there a data sheet on this with CRiP etc.?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,
The mode is 17. See the attached picture for some detail. The mode is very common but there are a few different CRIP as it is used on 4, 6, 8 cylinder engines. Generally the CRIP will be 60 or 90 or 420 (360 + 60) or 450 (360 + 90). The main thing you must be aware of is the sync sensor can have different polarity, i.e. the signal may go either low or high when at the tooth so trying to work out the CRIP by just looking at the physical teeth may mean you are out by 360 degrees.

Scott,
make sure that impulse wheel is not bent on Greg's motor. Let me know if you need help.

OK, getting back to this project now, would mode 17 still be OK for the 1.8T with the solenoid (on/off) VVT system? Belt drives exh cam, chain between exh and intake, sync on intake, VVT works by reversing slack side in chain between exh/int, its either on or off and ~20 crank degrees movement, so sync would be changing 20 degrees.

Simon got me, mode 17 will tolerate the sync moving.

For everyone else. A lot of these modes, including 17, are for variable cam engines as well so the Sync can move around.
