Motec Dealers - Special Handshake?

Hi,
Is there some special handshake needed to have your Motec dealers respond to emails?
Try as I might I have been ignored to date by numerous Motec dealers except one who responded once only.(and then ignored further gear information requests)
I know they (dealers) are busy on the tools during the day so I thought emails as a good way to communicate and get information of costings of Motec gear. Sadly, not the case.
Since I can not get gear directly from Motec and Motec dealers ignore communication how can I get gear I know is not stolen, dodgy, second hand or just plain rubbish?
To say it is very frustrating is a grand understatement and does nothing to help keep people using and recommending Motec gear.
Initially, I just want to buy a USB to CAN cable so I can start to learn about the M800 I have. I plan to add a dual lambda setup shortly plus some more sensors and stuff.

Although it is always good to go local*; Just find one that will respond to you and buy from them.
I have had good email response from Paul Masterson (QLD) and Tim Slako (Perth).
Your result may vary.


*Obviously Perth would barely count as being local to anywhere. :lol:

Hmmm, does your Perth fella do home visits? :shock:

I, like most country people, am very loyal to the people that I do business with but it is just getting the 'doing business' thing that is the drama. :roll: :?

Maybe the dealers perceive that distance is an issue? Country people are used to travelling to the cities for services such as health etc so it is not a big deal. I am in Sydney or Canberra at least monthly.

It took me years literaly to find a dealer who I was satisfied with in Sydney but they moved overseas so I do everything myself now with the help of this forum and its members.
Its not such a great idea to call motec direct as they are always busy and whilist they will help you its better to get someone like a dealer who has the time on the phone to go through things with you.
I do all my purchasing through Scott at CAPA performance in SA which is crazy when you think I live in Sydney but I just read him the part numbers out on the phone and the next few days it turns up on my doorstep, exceptional customer service.
Surprisingly for alot of Sydney dealers its all just too hard when I want to buy a couple of DTM connectors and they cant really be bothered but how do they know I'm not going to buy an ECU and SDL next week from them ?
I'd be happy to help you with anything in the way of advice etc if you need any as will alot of others much more experienced than I am on this forum. Feel free to PM me and I will try my best to help a fellow newbie.

Well I downloaded the ECU manager, but cannot figure out how to set up an ECU without actually having an ECU hooked up to it.
My thought was to work through the setting and get a feel for it all before taking a course.

There are ECU installation and tuning courses in Melb at MoTeC. Thee is also a monthly ECU university in Sydney offered on the weekend. AIM or someone else I think, but I have heard that it is good.

If you have an M800 - then maybe the MoTeC course is a good option.

I know for sure that Paul Masterson is as local as the AusPost.
I call him (or Vonnie) at 07-3352-5155 and the parts come in the local post.
You will need the credit card in hand, and the part number.

Otherwise you will just have to go through the dealer list and either drop in or otherwise work out who(m) you feel comfortable with.

Even if you find dealer you might find it worthwhile to take the course.
Crimpers and wiring takes either time or money.
Doing it yourself is not cheap - but you have a more intimate understanding of the wiring.

I am sure that the lack of interest by certain dealers is to the detriment of the Motec brand with other manufacturers in the marketplace. If these businesses do not want to do that sort of business then I think that Motec should reconsider being direct suppliers themselves and have dealers just do the nut and bolt work.
I agree regarding the dealers not knowing if a customer is a big $ customer or not. I mean, it just does not make sense at all.

I appreciate your offer and no doubt you will read of my learning curve. I enjoyed a couple of weeks in Joburg in late 2004 and spent a bit of time in Pretoria and surrounds before going to Capetown and JBay. Had about 4 weeks all up and enjoyed every minute. Your country is magnetic. I will be going back one day for sure.

I sure intend to do an ecu course and have viewed a couple of the filed webinars. I think that the webinars are a great idea.
Doing the work myself is preferred given that it is the greatest teaching tool there is. Being a sparky as well makes the wiring bit all that much easier

Hi Guys,
Sorry to hear about the bad experience, not wanting to make excuses but things can get a little hairy in this industry at times so a few missed return emails can be unfortunately common. I have to check my junk email all the time because I had a few "why are you ignoring my emails" type phone calls. :)

If you ever have problems with getting parts you should try another dealer or if this is giving no results you can call us straight away, it can be sorted quite quickly. We would much prefer you buy locally.

The chance of us selling directly is almost nil, just keeping up with current R and D work loads is a monumental challenge in itself and besides for a dealer doing the installation and tuning there is more of a chance for a "package price" rather than individual bits at retail price.

I highly recommend doing the ECU seminars as it will help you understand the basis of the settings you need to get the engine started and tuned. Doing the setup offline is no problem but again you still need to know the basis of what you enter and why, it is quicker and easier to do things offline for a complete setup.

Also, don't forget about the new webinars where we have been going through basic things like how sensor inputs work and how to calibrate them. If you go to the Webinar section of the website you will find the recordings of the ones we have already done.

Hi Holmz,
Not sure there is going to be a specifc online/offline webinar, can you give me an example of what you are having trouble with. You enter the numbers the same no matter if you are online or off. If you look through the seminar notes all the attendants will be entering the numbers offline.
