M&W ignition PRO-16 S3

Postby ElsmoortelG on Thu Feb 26, 2009 9:50 pm

We mistakenly wired the M&W ignition modules to a 8amps output. Does anybody know if this will give issues during normal use ?
Normally they have 15 amp fuses.

Im not sure how much it will pull, but on logging ive got of an LS2 V8 the highest spike on the Coil 12v Output was 14.7 Amps and the avg is about 5 amps. Maybe if you take the logging rate higher you might see higher spikes but the AVG is still well within 8 amps.

If its CDI then I think 8amps would be too little.

It should be ok, but if in doubt you can test it.
It is the average current that matters. The 8A outputs can take spike loading up to 60A.
If you have it wired already, set the trip current to 8A for the output, run it and watch the Load value in monitor PDM. You will need to rev the engine to put the most load on the output. If after about 30 seconds it doesn't reach say 70% load then it will be fine. If it goes over 70% then it doesn't leave a lot of head room but might be ok and will need further testing. If over 100% then you need to switch to a 20A output or double up with another 8A output.

It is an M&W pro 16 with a built in ignition expander.

pauljuzza

you are using the Pro-16D

http://www.mwignitions.com/pdf/Pro16d_S3.pdf

page 7/9

Supply voltage = 13.8V DC negative ground
Operating voltage = +5.5V to +15V
Maximum supply current = 7.0A
Power off current < 700uA
Maximum ignition frequency = 1000 Hz
Coil primary voltage = 480V
Spark energy = 115 millijoules @ 700Hz
Trigger = Motec IEX input
Tacho = 12V symmetric square wave
Maximum allowable case temperature = 105°C
Dimensions = 152L * 110W * 40H
Weight = 740gm
