SDL USB Problem

Postby Igor DCM on Sat Jul 25, 2009 5:54 am

Hi everyone,

I really hope someone can help me with this! here I go...

Our first SDL ever installed is giving me a headache. Our customer uses an USB cable to download his log files and suddenly we began to have "USB not identified" messages.

I thought: "Ok, maybe the harness got damaged"

I brought the SDL to our test bench and after multiple re-checks I was certain we had the pinout right. We are not first time users of MoTeC devices, specially displays! you can be pretty sure of this.

I tried something very odd then, I connected an UTC alongside the USB, and the communication worked.

"Ok that's because it is working through the CAN bus"

But then I unplugged the UTC and kept the USB cable alone in the SDL. I still had working communication. I could view channels, "send" and "get" the configuration file... everything.

After trying everything I know to fix the problem (reinstalled the USB driver countless times, used 3 different laptops, tried 2 different software versions and upgraded the firmware a dozen times) I got nowhere. What happens is that the USB port only works after I plug the UTC with it, otherwise only "USB not identified" is all I get. After unplugging the UTC it keeps working until I close the software or powercycle the system.

This is very odd and it would be nice to have a solution for this without sending the SDL back to AUS, which is something very expensive for us.

Counting on your help guys!

Thank you very much and kind regards to all.

Hi Igor,
First, I would recommend you do a continuity test with a multimeter of Pin 4 and 9 on the SDL 37 pin connector without the loom connected. This will test the USB ground and battery ground. If there is no beep then the USB ground may have been damaged. Cheers.
