Idle hunt

Postby AaronM on Fri May 15, 2009 10:42 pm

Hello,

I have an idle hunt issue. The engine is a Ford turbo 4L in line six with ford 2 wire pwm idle valve. XF Falcon type. I can get it to idle well in gear but not out of gear and vice versa if I change the normal position etc. I have tried all sorts of proportional and integral gain settings. It gets quite bad when slowing down in gear say 20km/h. Map is consistent as is the injector time. Is there anyone interested in looking at the cal file for me or any advice?

What road speed have you set it to start controlling idle?

Aaron,
do you have cold start issues with that idle valve? If not, what is the set up? I am having trouble with my 5.0L windsor. I am assuming it is same as V8 one.

Hello,

I have sorted it out now. Cold start is excellent. Use the logger and watch your idle set point against engine speed. Log the idle actuator position as well. You will see the problem pretty quickly. What sort of problems are you experiencing?

I had to add another channel to the idle speed table. It's an auto. I added in gear and out of gear position then setup idle speeds for both positions. Next I setup the idle control 'normal position' for both gear positions as well. Works awesome. Normal position of the pwm actuator is the key here. I can have a look at your Cal if you want, may be able to help.

I use DBW Idle control but had used the Ford valve for a few years before and found it needed some time to get settled on decel with an auto/high stall hence the 12 kph on setting.

Glad you have it sorted now as they can provide many hours of frustration ;)

Aaron,
I am running an M800 based on TPS/MAP with a 1993 Ford 5.0L windsor small block. It is more or less a daily driver so am trying to setup the ISC Ford part # E9AZ9F715AA (2 wire) for cold starts without much luck. It operates at 160 Hz square wave & zero signal is minimum duty cycle. I am told duty cycle can be anywhere from 20% to 80% but realistically it operates between 40% to 60%.
When stone cold it takes a fair while to crank - when it catches I need to use throttle to hold at 1200 rpm for 20 - 30 seconds & then it will hold idle for rest of warm up albeit rough. When hot there is absolutely no problem. Seems that if I use throttle it goes to a different table.
I have attached a couple files which may help.
