Motec M4-8 9502 006 EPS B2

Postby Doug-WG on Mon Apr 12, 2021 5:46 pm

Hi all, I have a very old Motec M4-8 Serial number 9502 006 EPS B2 that I have had for many years.
It is installed in a project car that I have been working on and off for the past 15 years, vehicle has a twin turbo V8

I also have a Motec IEX Ignition Expander Serial number 0623 EPS 0010 and 2 x M & W Inductive Ignition Modules

I am now back doing the wiring and obviously will need to program the Motec
Unit is in great condition but I have upgraded computers and laptops several times and now I have relized I no longer have the software files nor the serial cable

Does anyone have appropriate files and/or perhaps know where I can source a serial cable??

I also assume that the software will need to run on an older version of windows, please advise XP or whatever ?

Regards Doug

Looks like you want the M48 EMP software that you can download from latest releases:

https://www.motec.com.au/software/latestreleases/

It indicates it will run on Windows 7 32-bit and earlier. I know I've used it with a USB Serial adapter with M48s in the past.

To communicate with the M48 you will need to use a laptop with Windows 7 (32 bit) or earlier installed, and you will also need the PCI cable to connect the laptop to the M48. The part number for the PCI cable is 63003 for the 2m long cable, and 63004 for the 6m long cable. These can be ordered through an approved MoTeC Dealer.

Hi, and thanks for the responses, PLEASE NOTE however my unit is a very old Motec M4-8 Serial number 9502 006 EPS B2, not an M4 nor a M48, it was built I assume 2003-2004???

I have attached a pic for reference

Very happy if current M48 software works but I doubt it

Regards Doug

M4-8 & M48 are the same device.

You just need to download 6.2 M48 software connect to the ECU via the MoTeC PCI cable and it will tell you what version is in the ECU if there is a mismatch.

Cheers, really appreicated. I have asked MPC for a price on the cable, so once sorted will just need to finish off the wiring etc :) Regards Doug

Hi All, Finally have my PCI cable 63004 bought from MPC and found an old laptop and also a desktop both running XP Professional, as previously directed I am using the last version of M48_20d

When I hook it all up I simply get "ECU not connected" no matter what I try

I have the silver end of the 63003 into the ECU D9 connector

The laptop I am using with a usb to serial converter and I have set the com port to 1 and tried 1200 & 9600 baudrates to no avail

The desktop has a native rs232 serial port and have checked again Com 1 with both 1200 & 9600 but same result

The ecu loom is providing power of 2.65v to the output serial rs232 male that plugs into the factory PCI cable top LHS pin

Note, All the engine connections of the car loom are currently disconnected, as I have the ECU and loom out of the car to test if i can get any of it working, the ECU, Ignition expander are of course all connected, as are all of the earths, and I have a 12v battery hooked up to the Main Postive harness

Any suggestions would be very much appreiciated, Regards Doug

Did you have a typo on the software 6.2 is the latest version.

USB to serial converters sometimes don't work as they do not emulate a native serial port correctly.

The baud rate on your PC wont matter, the software will automatically change it to the correct speed.

Is the D9 on the ECU connector wired correctly? The M4 D9 wiring wont work. I suggest check the MoTeC drawings for the correct wiring.

Yes, software is latest 6.2

What I was clarifying is the output voltage from the ECU to the serial port

"The ecu loom is providing power of 2.65v to the output serial rs232 male that plugs into the factory PCI cable top LHS pin"

I will unwrap the insulation tape and check the ECU to DB9 wiring, but I am assuming that it is correct as this has not been changed since the original engine was previously running

"The ecu loom is providing power of 2.65v to the output serial rs232 male that plugs into the factory PCI cable top LHS pin"

That is possibly correct. One of the D9 connectors should have 5V on it possibly pin 1,or measure pin 24 on the ECU.
