Magnetic / VR sensor for wheel speed

Postby bdinnerv on Tue Sep 25, 2018 7:13 pm

I am looking for a magnetic sensor to use for wheel speeds with an M880 - the car I am putting them on (Sierra Cosworth) has an older Teves ABS system with ATE VR sensors which a) are almost impossible to get these days and b) are a pain with the wiring so I am looking at alternatives.

The trigger discs in the hubs have a fairly small tooth profile - about 1.5mm tooth width, 3-4mm pitch and 2mm depth (see attached image) which I think rules out using a hall effect sensor (unless someone can suggest one that will work with this small tooth profile).

I see there is the 52002 listed on the Motec site however there is no specs document for it to check the required tooth profile - does anyone know what they are? The 2 other magnetic sensors list a tooth gap of greater than 10mm which rules them out in this application.

I have also seen this type of magnetic sensor - https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/magnetic ... s/0304172/ which has an integrated IC to output a digital signal - could this be used instead, also negating the requirement for a DMCD?

why not grind or machine some teeth out to give a larger spacing, thus allowing the use of a hall effect or any mag sensor.

That is my last alternative, am trying to see if there is a sensor I can use first before removing metal - these parts are getting harder and harder to find for a car that was pretty much only sold in the UK in pretty limited numbers.

Lots of OEM use fine tooth multi tooth wheels for ABS...probably as handy just to find another OEM sensor ?

ie...sensor and ring ? just adapt the sensor ?

Keep in mind for wheel speed you want to use a zero RPM sensor if you can, not one that needs XXX RPM to start working.

For hall effect with small teeth, try this one (or a similar modern one), it will handle small teeth-

Thanks, the stats seem to be pretty close to what I need so will give one of those a go.
