The only issue I can see with that is that you have to get the length of the resistor and the wire exactly right.

If the wire from the splice to the pin is slightly longer or shorter than the resistor then there will some tension in the wiring and this can lead to failure with vibration, especially because the resistor leads are solid wire.

A very belated thanks Adrian.

Got all this hooked up finally (it's an entire vehicle re-wire from scratch, so slow careful progress) and next step is to give it all power and start checking. Used your preferred method which worked a treat through a DT plug. Fingers crossed!
