M84 2JZ Install

Postby Vlad on Fri Oct 14, 2016 8:34 am

Hy guys, my name's Vlad, and from Romania. I've been mounting and mapping stand alone's for about 8 years now, and i'm at my first motec full install. I've done about 5-6 motec mappings till now, but just mappings, the cars arrived idling well. Now, i'm at my first install. The engine's a 2JZ, forged internals, 8.5:1CR, oem cams, after market Intake mannifold, and 90mm throttle plate, 950cc deatchwerk injectors (high), HX40 turbo and a custom milspec loom made by your's trully. I've fitted a haltech, because that's what i'm most familiar with, and managed to make 440hp @ 1bar, since the engine was stil runing in, i've let it like that for a while, the owner, i don't know how, managed to crossthread a spark plug, and we had to take the engine apart. We alsow bought a new M84, since the owner decidet that he want's the best for his engine. Now, my problems are:

For the 36-1, VR, trigger and sensor setup that i have, witch sync mode do i run? i would like to run for now, till winter, a semi-seq setup with wasted spark, just with crank signal. All i want for now is to make the car push the same 440 as before, at the same boost, after that, i will go up, i like to take it one step at a time, gradually increase, and first thing first, gain knowledge!

From what i have read, i was thinking: Ref/synk Mode "5" and Nr. of cylinders "36". Correct me if i'm wrong please :)
PS: Glad to be a part of this world now :D

Hi Vlad,
You are correct for 36-1 on the crank with no cam sensor you should use ref/sync mode 5 and set cyl# 36.
Use the ref/sync capture function to decide whether you need rising or falling polarity setting. If you arent sure then post your ref/sync capture file here and I'll help.

Thanks Adam :). The sensor works on falling edge, because that the way it runed with the Haltech before. I've wired the i jectors as folowing: INJ OUT1-Cyl1
INJ OUT2-Cyl5
INJ OUT3-Cyl3
INJ OUT4-Cyl6
INJ OUT5-Cyl2
INJ OUT6-Cyl4

IGN OUT1-Cyl 1 and 6
IGN OUT2-Cyl 2 and 5
IGN OUT3-Cyl 3 and 4
Is this correct? :)

I'm runing the WAG 14Amp red coils, with bulit in igniters.

I'm having trouble sync'ing.... with the 36-1 crank wheel, it only sync's in 'sync mode nr. 6" wit cyl number "36" . In "sync mode nr. 5" it just reads the rpm, but it's not sync'ing... any ideas please :(

Might be that the sensor wheel is not 36-1, but 36-2. That 36-2 is/was used by Toyota for many many years. 36-1 was Ford invention, and 60-2 is an old Bosch model. :)

Checking out the Ref/Sync-capture gives a hint of this.

It's a 36-1, custom made, i'm thinking of cutting a extra tooth, near the missing one, to make the gap bigger, making it 36-2....the funny thing is that, in sync mode 6, where it dosen't need the cam sensor, it sync's,(but the manual says that the speed must be provided from the camshaft speed) but in mode 5, where the cam sensor is required, even thow cyl# is set to 36, making it work in semi-seq mode and wasted spk, it dosen't sync, is there some extra setting or something beside the '36 cylinder number' or maybe the gap is too small... the trigger wheel is 36 teeth, lenght of the teeth is same lenght as the gap between them, so i was thinking that only one missing is not enough for the ecu count the gap.

PS: If the selected setup is a 36-1 + sync(cam), will the engine work if the cam sensor fails or is disconected? i'm trying to narrow down my searching to either software or hardware (trigger wheel)

Vlad, Sorry, I gave the wrong info earlier, I must have been half asleep...
Ref/sync mode should be #6 for your setup. leave cylinders set at 36.

Thank's Adam, but do i need to read the rpm from the cam or from the crank? (manual says that for 4stroke engine, i need the trigger wheel on the camshaft...i have it mounted on the crank now obviously.

36-1 on the crank will work with the settings given above. Ignore the comment in the help file for mode 6, it doesn't take into account the cyl = 36 setting

Turns out that the motec had some trouble distinguishing my equal lenght teeh and gaps between them, from the missing one, when the spark plugs are in, without them when the engine turns at exactly 190rpm it was syncing. I cut a extra tooth, and now i'm running sync mode "8" and it's working fine, went yesterday to mapp it, but now i'm having some trouble with noise on the map sensor...when i plug my sensor ground wires into pin B15 or B16 the map and the crank sensor stop working.....now i have them wired directly to chassis gnd, they work, but are a bit noisy. I cannot understand why they won't work on the normal ecu pins...
