Which GPS to choose

Postby CP_Racing on Tue Jun 14, 2016 6:54 pm

Hello,

My setup is M800 goldbox with Logging enabled, and SDL without logging.

Should I choose GPS-L5 or GPS-L10 ??

And then, connect it to M800 or to SDL ??

Maybe buying SDL logging is a good idea ??

Thanks in advance for your replies and clarifications.

It depends on what exactly you want to do with the GPS. If you just want to log Speed, Lat/Long to do track mapping then an L5 into the ECU is fine. If however you want GPS lap timing then you would get an L10 and put it into the SDL.

You can put either an L5 or L10 into the SDL but should only put an L5 into the ECU.

I would like to be able to use gps lap timing. Is it possible to connect L10 to SDL that has no logging enabled ??

Yes you can connect a GPS to an SDL that has no logging enabled. Obviously you would only be able to use it to display lap times, lap gain/loss etc and wouldn't have any data for analysis in i2.

So, let me get some final clarifications.

If we connect a GPS-L5 on SDL do we get lap times, gain - loss etc ?? I do know that I will not have any data for analysis without logging memory enabled.

If we connect a GPS-L10 on SDL, is it possible to feed gps data to M800 through can bus (data sent from SDL to M800) ??

Finally, L10 vs L5 is double "resolution" of gps information or not ??

Yes if you connect either GPS to the SDL you will get lap timing information, including gain/loss.

The M800 won't receive the GPS lat/long data via CAN, only RS-232. You could send GPS Speed on CAN if you wanted to log that in the ECU.

I guess you could kind of call the L-10 double the resolution of the L-5. They are the same unit, it is just the L5 has firmware that limits its transmit rate to 5Hz instead of 10Hz. If you are using this in the SDL you would get the L-10.
