UTC won't talk to laptop

Postby Billzilla on Tue Nov 10, 2015 9:09 am

It's worked previously on the same laptop just fine (that's how I've used it to communicate with the M400 previously) but now it won't.
In Device Manager it shows that the UTC doesn't have the right or properly working drivers. Something like that.
I've uninstalled all the drivers (USB & UTC general pack) and installed them all again.
Tried updating the driver by pointing Windows (W7 64 bit, new install since last time) but it says it can't find a suitable driver.
Tried updating the UTC with the latest firmware, the Start Menu has the link but the util to do it isn't there.
Rebooted the laptop several times.

So I tried the UTC on this desktop PC, everything works fine - there's no way I can use it to talk to the ECU though, unless I have a 20 metre long USB cable, etc.

So what's wrong and how do I fix it please?

I had this same exact problem on my laptop the other day, basically for some reason the driver has become corrupted and windows won't let you reinstall it. The way to fix it is as follows:

1) Run msconfig (press windows key, type msconfig, press enter)
2) On the boot tab tick "safe boot" with networking then click OK
3) A system configuration dialog should be shown: click restart. Alternately manually restart the computer.
4) After Windows boots in safe mode go to Device Manager, locate MoTeC UTC, right click and then click 'update driver software'. Click 'Search automatically for updated driver software', the driver should now install correctly.
5) Run msconfig and on the boot tab untick "safe boot" then click OK
6) Restart in normal mode

Sometimes the msconfig function will not be found when searching for it in safe mode, to work around it I recommend that when you first start up msconfig when running Windows in normal mode, that you right click on the icon in the task bar and select the "Pin to Taskbar" option, this will allow for easy access to the function when you have finished in safe mode.

No good sorry.
The UTC shows up and having no faults after booting in safe mode, nor will it update the driver using your method.
I rebooted into normal mode, it again shows as having an error in Device Manager.

If it were me, I would do the following:

-- Using Device Manager, open the properties for the MoTeC UTC, and click the Driver tab, and the Uninstall button.
-- Disconnect the UTC from the USB.
-- Download the latest Window7 compatible UTC driver (v2.08.28) from http://www.motec.com/filedownload.php/M ... docid=3576
-- Run the UTC Driver installer
-- Attach the UTC and let Windows automatically load the new driver.

Good Luck!

Needs more than luck, because that didn't work either.
I also can uninstall the USB drivers, they refuse to do so.

Minor progress.
I got it working, but on a mates laptop. When installing the software, it too got an error message about the USB drivers not installing properly and then the UTC showing up in Device Manager as not being installed properly.
I deleted it, then tried again and for whatever reason it seemed to work.
I've also tried that on my own laptop and it didn't work. :(

Have you had any more luck with installing the UTC drivers?

When you booted to safe mode did you use the exact steps above? There are a couple of ways to boot to safe mode and this is the only way that actually works.

If you can't even uninstall a driver then something really unusual is going on. Do you have antivirus software installed? It might be a good idea to do a scan and see if there is anything malicious (virus/malware etc) that is preventing normal windows operations from working.

Yep I did all that, still no good.
I'm at a loss as to what to do - It all worked perfectly before but not now.
