SOLVED!!! D175 Connection on a M84 ECU

Postby xgrapher on Tue Oct 27, 2015 3:53 am

Just purchased a used D175 from a shop and don't know how to get it to interact with my M800. The display came with a 2 page manual which doesn't speak at all about which application I need to install from the bundled flash disk that came along. No wiring diagram whatsoever! Me and at least 5 of my friends tried to connect without success. We wired 12V to ignition, Ground to power ground, CAN LO to M800's CAN LO & CAN HI to M800's CAN HI.

What are the next steps?

According to this the D175 will not work with a M800, it is designed to be driven by a logger - ADL, SDL, EDL, etc:

Use Display Creator to configure the D175. You may need to use an Ethernet logger to "bridge" to the CAN bus, but it may be possible to use your UTC. Give it a try. See if you can send a config to the C175. I have always used Ethernet-enabled loggers with Display Creator so I'm not sure.

You will need to configure the M800 CAN bus to send data you want to have displayed, and you will need to configure Display Creator with the CAN messages.

Not an easy project (not as easy as if you were using a logger who's Dash Manager created the .dbc files with the CAN configuration), but I would think it would be possible. You just have to be determined.

Good Luck!

Many thanks for your detailed reply David.

I'm new to Motec and I'm already hating it so much right now. This Display doesn't come cheap and therefore we thought it wouldn't be such big of a deal that it might need an interface module between the ECU and itself. If that's true Motec sucks big time and they are ripping people off.

I could wire the ethernet cable and try things out but could you please tell me exactly how to wire them? Please I'm a newbie dummy and wanna get this thing up and running. Also the exact name of the software would be nice to know. Please guys bear with me and try to help a brother out ;-)

AND MOTEC THANK YOU FOR NOT RESPONDING TO MY EMAIL!!!

As said above, unfortunately the D175 is not designed to work with a M800.

You would need a C125, C127, C185, C187 ect

Motec have all datasheets, documents, manuals here on there website and they list what each device is compatible with. The D175 has its place, but its not designed for your application. Bit odd saying Motec is ripping people off, i would say the shop who sold it to you, who i would assume dosnt know the products there selling is whos ripping people off.

The MoTeC support system is really setup for the Authorized Dealer selling the equipment to help the customer with setup and configuration. I certainly do that for my customers. I know you bought this used, but it sounds like you might need to pay for some competent support to help you.

How about providing a bit of information about where you are located, so we can point you to a dealer or support person in your area. We might need some more details about exactly what MoTeC devices you have currently installed.

BTW, I believe the D175 will default to a MDD-compatible mode (if a new firmware is installed and no Display Creator config loaded), and that is supported by the M800. Even if you can't use Display Creator, you should be able to display M800 Parameters.

As to the wiring, Your M800 should be wired with a CAN bus connection to a 5-pin port where you connect your USB-To-CAN adapter (the UTC I referred to). You will need to splice into this wiring near one end of CAN bus (do you have other CAN devices such as a Lambda-To-CAN (LTC) or BeaconReceiver (BR2), or Serial-To-CAN (STC) adapter?). You will need to use a pair of wires twisted to the CANbus spec (about 2 twists per inch I recall). You will probably need to add a 100 ohm terminating resistor near the D175 end of the CAN bus. This wiring information is detailed in the M800 manual available here:

http://www.motec.com/downloads/downloadmanuals/

There is no need to wire Ethernet unless you are wiring a dash/logger that uses Ethernet. I was suggesting that you attempt to use Display Creator with a UTC connected to the same CAN bus as the D175. My guess as to your problem is the lack of a CAN terminating resistor and/or lack of proper software configuration.

Stephen from Motec Support confirmed that the D127 will only connect via dataloggers. He said I could try using the Display Creator if I had the knowledge of CAN bus.

Could somebody shed some light to this?

I have interacted with my car's ECU via CAN using Arduino to obtain the RPM - this was a couple of years ago. So I do understand the data packets and translation of bits. However, I don't have the Motec protocol to begin with and I do not know where and how should I use them. A quick look at the Display Creator seminar tells me that it is merely a designer for the dashes.

Can anybody please guide me step by step on how to do what I want to do? I am determined and without a choice I need to make this work.

Open Display Creator, use File->New then Select D175, and choose a template when prompted.

With your new project open, click the Communication tab, then use the M800 icon to create a "New M800 Message Stream". With the M800 Message Stream selected, the right side of the screen has a field labeled "Data Set", click the pull-down triangle and select the only choice -- "Data Set 3". This will add all the messages from the M800.

(Configure your M800 to transmit Data Set 3 on the CAN bus)

Now just use the rest of the Display Creator software to configure how you want those channels to be displayed.

Good Luck!

SOLVED!!!

Did exactly as David said and it worked. I have a M84 so couldn't configure anything on the ECU side but it worked very well with the M800 data stream.

First I went to Configure in the Display Creator and upgraded the firmware. Each time I needed to interact with the Display I had to pull the M84 off. Then I designed my dash and went back to Configure and chose CHECK/WRITE and everything was in order. In my design I defined the channels from the M800 data stream and deleted all other channels that came with the sample gauge templates.

Thank you very much David, you are a life saver!

And thank you very much Stephen from Motec Support FOR NEVER SENDING ME THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT YOU PROMISED!

Still hating Motec, loving Megasquirt FOREVER - best support ever!
