M84 REF/SYNC connector wiring

Postby zerotwo on Thu Jun 25, 2015 11:22 am

I have the un-terminated harness for the M84. From the ECU harness connectors there are two groups of wires for both the REF & SYNC sensors onto which I need to install a 4-pin female Deutch connetor. Each group contains a red (+), black (0V), white (signal) and a shielding wire. I'm assuming the shielding wire, if used, needs to be connected to the 0V pin. Is this correct? I'm using Hall Effect sensors for both REF & SYNC. When facing the male connector from the sensor with the latch on top, there is a white wire in the upper left and lower right corners. I'm assuming one of these is the signal wire but how do I determine which one it is? Sorry for the basic questions but this is my first Motec harness and I want to get it right.

Hello,

I have not used the M84 unterm'd harness before,

First the Shielded wire should only be connected to 0V on one side of the shield run, so check continuity to see if it is already connected to 0V near the ecu connectors already.

If it is not connected to 0V already then splice into the 0V wire.

If it is already connected then just leave the wire as is (unconnected)
(The shielding wire is probably already connected to ground and is probably only there to continue the shield run through a connector to extend to another shielded wire)

For information regarding which wire is signal, it is best to speak directly to the sensor supplier, (and maybe inquire about needing to continue the shield run through the sensor connector).

Thanks for the advice re: shielding wire. Your suggestion re: contacting the Hall sensor manufacturer is a good idea in theory except for the fact that I purchased the sensor from Motec and as near as I can tell there is no manufacturer information on it. So, the mystery of the two white wires persists. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. One thing I do know about them is that they do not appear to come from the same source as there is no continuity between them.

Sensors sold by MoTeC in the USA come with data sheets detailing the pinout. You don't show your location, so I don't know if you got this from MoTeC Australia, or MoTeC USA, or elsewhere. Either way, the supplier should be able to provide that information.

For example, you'll find many of the datasheets here:

http://www.motec.com/downloads/downloaddatasheets/
(Look in the USA Grail for all the USA data sheets)

If you can give us a part number of the sensor you have, perhaps we can help you find the info you need.

The datasheet for the "M DHALL 437-DTM", shows a DTM-4S on the sensor, with the following pinout:
Pin 1 - Drain (shield)
Pin 2 - 0 volts
Pin 3 - Signal Out
Pin 4 - 8 Volt Power

This same pinout is used for all the other Hall Effect sensors I could find in the USA Grail document.

I live in the Eastern US and got my sensors from Motec East. FWIW, I did not receive any data sheets with my sensors. Unfortunately I could not find the datasheet that detailed the pinouts at the link you provided. Can you tell me the orientation of the pins you referenced. Is it 1 2 or 1 3 or 1 4
3 4 2 4 2 3

If I had the orientation of the pinouts you found, that could be a big help and answer my question. Thanks for your assistance

The Deutsch DTM connectors have the pins numbers molded into the housings (wire side usually, sometimes on the body side (DTM 2 & DTM 3) . If you have a connector you are trying to wire, look carefully for the pin numbers.

Here is the datasheet from MoTeC for one of the DHall sensors. Note this shows the DTM 4S from the Wire Entrance Side (W.E.S. on the drawing).
