BMW E36 M3 (single vanos)

Postby Martin on Mon Nov 17, 2008 6:51 pm

Hi,

Has anyone got experience with the E36 M3 (single vanos) engine? I need information on the Cam Control setup and ref sync sensors. The OEM setup has a Ref sensor and 3 Sensors on the 2 Cams. As far as i know The ref and exhaust cam sensor (stationary cam) goes to the ECU for running the engine. The Inlet cam position and the sync sensor on the inlet cam goes to another control system which just do the VANOS. Have i got this right? Are they Mag sensors?

I would greatly appreciate any help with this engine regarding the Ref/sync mode and setup of the sensors. Also, is the Cam control on the e36 the single wire or dual wire type? (Cam control 1 or Cam control 2) Would anybody have the Setup for the e36 Cam control?

Thanks
Martin

It all depends on which motor you're using. We've done E36 with S52 motors, and they are very much like S54s without drive by wire. Its a farily straightforward motor to do; do you know which KIND of VANOS you have? Does it use two drivers or a signal driver?

Im not sure, but i will find out ASAP. I think its a S52..is that a single driver?

In brief..

60-2 Crank
3 cam sensors...2 stationary and one for cam position. I guess on the motec you will just run the cam position sensor for both Sync and Cam position?

This motor wil not be standard, Supercharged, N2O, cams, all different internals. Sensors wil be stock

Any suggestions?

E36 M3 engines can be confusing. If you have a single VANOS engine in South Africa it is likely that it is an S50B30 which is an early 3.0 litre version. As far as I know all S50B32 (3.2 Litre) engines were dual VANOS. The S52 is specific to the USA market.

Martin, there are some installation notes on the web site for the S50B32 (dealer login required). These might help. I know that the VANOS in the 3 litre version had a much simpler VANOS control which moved tha cams at a couple of RPM points rather than being constantly variable but I do not know if this was a mechanical difference or an ECU limitation.

I completed one Monday with that particular engine and Vanos arrangement. The cam triggers are each 8 tooth wheels with none missing or additional while the "center" trigger is a single tooth per engine cycle. Use mode 7 and wire the center cam sensor as the sync. Cam control will require 2 consecutive aux outputs (adv & retard) for the intake cam and should be configured as function 123.

Feel free to email ed@dynotuner.net for further clarification.
