2004 Subaru STi M800 won't start

Postby Mr.Baer on Thu Nov 07, 2013 12:12 am

I have been working on getting this car to start for a few weeks now. I am working with a tuner that is very familar with motec however they are on the opposite side of the country. I would like to get this car started and idling before they come to tune the car. I am trying to start this on a stock motor that ran perfectly a year ago before it came out of the car. I have a built motor to swap in once I can get this stock motor up and running as I have not changed a single sensor between the two motors.

The car is a 2004 USDM Subaru STi. It is running the stock EJ257 with stock heads. The cam sensors are hall effect and I am pretty sure the Crank sensor is Magnetic/inductive. I have attached my start file, i tried to attach a Ref/Sync however it wouldn't let me. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

After doing some research, it seems that I need to have my Ref signal and my sync signal tied together and the cam signal goes into dig 1.

I don't think this is how the car is actually wired, i have ref "crank" into b1 and sync "cam signal" b2 from what Motec settings are saying I need crank into both ref and sync and dig one pinned with the cam sensor

For some reason your map uploaded wouldnt even work on my computer. Was if it was corrupt or something

The USDM cars ( is this DMW too ? )

Do they have a crank sensor, and only a single hall effect cam sensor on each head ?

Or does it have the mag crank/cam and further hall effect cam sensors on each head as per EDM/JDM vehicles of that age ?

Crank is your "ref"
"Sync" will be the appropriate cam signal.

I would doubt you should be pairing any inputs.

I have a crank sensor, hall effect sensor and a Variable cam sensor.

When I set up the ref/sync motec told me I should set it to mode 38 and reading that says you should set ref and sync the same that is where I got that.

I have Cam 1 going into sync, I have cam 2 going to digi 1 and crank going to ref.

The variable cam sensors are going to aux input 6 and 7

I was able to open the file with Ecu Manager 3.5
No obvious problem...

I can pm you my email address if you want to send me ref/sync capture.

mag crank trigger should go to Ref.

Hall cam sensor ? should go to sync

Hall variable cam sensor should go to Dig1

38 : Subaru Legacy 4cyl quad cam 2004
Ref : 36-2-2-2: 36 evenly spaced teeth with several missing
(per rev)
NOTE: Must connect Ref and Sync inputs to the crank signal
and setup identically.
Edge: FALL, Levels and filters must be set the same.
LH Inlet: 4-1 : 4 evenly spaced teeth with one missing
(per cycle)
DIG 1: Connect to LH Inlet cam and set to cam position
measurement: this is required for REF/SYNC mode to
function.
Edge = Fall, Offset = 100, Channel = 3, Teeth = 4, Filter = 2
CRIP: 580

Not sure on the variances.

UK/EDM/JDM cars of that age have

1 x Mag crank/ref sensor
1 x Mag cam/sync sensor

and 2 x Hall variable sensors. One for each intake cam. And both of which are monitored via 2 digital inputs.

Later DBW cars, 2006+ have ( and this may be same as earlier USDM models )

1 x Mag crank/ref sensor
2 x hall cam/sync sensors.

The LH cam sensor is used for both sync, and variable cam position.
RH sensor is used for variable only.

From talking with motec, they are telling me to connect the Crank mag sensor to both the ref and sync.

Then connect the left and right cam angle sensor to dig input and the avcs cam sensors to dig as well.

From your description, that's 6 sensors ??

Ive never seen a Subaru engine with that many, with AVCS on intake cams only.

Exactly how many sensors do you have ?

I guess that got worded a little weird. I have a total of 5 sensors

I have 1 crank sensor that is to be spliced into the ref and sync on the B connector into the M800. Pin b1 and b2

The cam position sensors go in to digital inputs. b7 and b8

Avcs intake goes into a33 and a34

I am trying to wire it up this way tonight I will post on the findings
