GPS units MoTeC is 5htz whilst others are 20htz

Our 10Hz GPS will work with the older SDL.

i gather from Motec tech data that the higher speed units wont work with hundred series ECU's.

what, if any, is the downside of using the older 5hz units?

If you are differentiating position to get speed or d^2/dt to get acceleration, then faster is better.
If not, then there is not great drama in the lower rate.

The 10-Hz unit does 20-Hz with an upgrade, but I am not sure if that can be fed into the ECU over CAN (using a UTC "USB 2 CAN").

There is a little confusion here regarding the GPS units we sell. The official MoTeC GPS units are the GPS-L5 and the GPS-L10.

GPS-L5 - This is a 5hz unit which is primarily for use with M800 ECUs (19200 baud). (see http://www.motec.com.au/gpsl5/gpsl5overview/ )

GPS-L10 - This is a 10hz unit which is intended for all other MoTeC devices (38400 baud). (see http://www.motec.com.au/gpsl10/gpsl10overview/ )

Neither of these units can be upgraded to 20hz.

You can use an STC (serial to CAN) converter to put the GPS data on the CAN bus if required, but this is not suitable for the M800 as it requires that the GPS data come via RS232.

There is a commonly used non-MoTeC GPS option (made and supplied in the USA by Racegrade) that comes in 10hz and 20hz options (both 57600 baud). (see http://racegrade.com/gps.html )
