Steering Wheel angle

Hi All,

I've got a CDL3 Track kit upgraded with pro analysis, 8 MB (didn't realize this wasn't default though) and 12 IO.

I've spliced this into the CAN +/- located @ the ABS on my 2002 Porsche Boxster.

I've got everything working and now realize I NEED steering wheel angle sensor. It seems my Porsche does not have this available but years of models after mine do.

I'm gathering that this is going to be a bit of a pain to get working, but I'm wondering if anyone has any information that they can share to create one on my own.

I'm looking at sparkfun at some rotary potentiometers and thinking "Is this really all I need"? If I was to take a rotary from sparkfun and somehow mount it and link the spine of the steering wheel onto the potentiometer is that it?

Is there a better way?

You don't say where you are located, but you might take a look at some of the sensors we offer on our webstore:

A string Potentiometer is often the easiest to mount:

Or a rotary pot with a toothed belt:

On some cars it's easier to mount a linear pot on the steering rack:

Hey David,

I'm in Northern California. I checked out your site and have a question about the String Potentiometer.

Do you have any directions on how to install this? I'd like to see how easy this would be. I'm wanting to get this done before my Thunderhill event in July.

Thanks for the info these look great. Could the linear pots be used for dampers?

Yes, the Linear Pots are typically used to measure Damper Position (and then we can calculate all sorts of things...)

If you do a google image search for "steering string pot", you will find a few photos of this type of device attached to a steering column. You could also possibly attach to a steering arm or tie-rod depending on the pot displacement.
