Bit of help with my wee rally car please.

Postby Tristan on Sun Feb 27, 2011 12:55 pm

Hi all , I have a Ford KA Rally car , I've replaced the old 1.3 engine with a 1400cc , 16v Puma motor , good bit of headwork etc , and using Motorbike Throttle bodies , and the existing M4 that controlled the old engine . I have it starting , but it's incredibly rich , black smoke on blipping the throttle , misfiring and sooting the plugs , even leaving the pistons damp on top!
I'm using the standard fuel rail and pressure regulator from the Puma , and the standard Ka fuel pump.

Before I bring it to a Motec Agent's rolling road , can I tweak the AFR , just so I can make it run a bit sweeter , to check for leaks , be they oil , coolant or indeed vacuum? And either check or calibrate the Throttle Pot , as I've wired the 'bike one into the Car's loom.

Can I just connect to the Rs232 port on my computer? The car has a lambda sensor connected .

Thanks in advance , Tristan.

Hi Tristan,

If your M4 has a serial number greater than 3000 then you can use a standard serial cable to connect from the M4 to your laptop. You can then download/install our latest version of M4 software. This will allow you to communicate and do some minor tuning before you take it to the dyno :)

We have a PCI cable which is used to communicate with the < 3000 serial numbered M4s and all the M48s...

Poor spark could also give similar symptoms

Got it sorted , took it to myMotec man , TrackDayPerformance.ie , and we found the ECU was acting up , and wasn't getting signals from the TPS , or temp sensors etc . He fixed it ,and mapped it , running clean as a whistle now .

Oh and my 1st rally with the new engine was 2 days later , and we won our class! Happy days. :D :D

Thread revival!

How do , all

I've been pottering away at the wee Ka , stripping back all un-needed bits of Ford wiring loom. Looking at the MoTec wiring code , it mentions PATS in a few places , anyone know what this is?

PATS = Passive Anti Theft System.
You say you are looking at the Motec wiring schematic, but this is fords system, nothing to do with motec??

Sorry, I have that too, I just posted the above to show where I encountered the PATS acronym. It's an M4 in the OE Ford ECU case, with the OE Ford ECU plug.
Thank you.
