Lock down your project file?

Postby CarloL on Sat Nov 26, 2016 10:42 pm

Hi

Is it possible to create a distributable version without the need to supply the project file?
How do you prevent customers distributing your creations and possible monetising them ?

Does the passwording system work via DC as well as the normal display manager? Otherwise I would assume anyone who wanted to download display creator could download the file from the dash and do with it as they will.

Even if it does you would want to discuss locking a dash down with the customer (Or from my point of view, more importantly the OWNER of the dash) If I found my dash which I had spent thousands of dollars on locked down without my permission lets just say the language used with the person who locked it would be spectacular.

If it is a concern to you, perhaps best to discuss it with any owner and charge appropriately if they want to effectively own the "Copyright" on the dash file to do with as they will, or less if they are prepared to have the dash locked down (Assuming that is possible with a DC file) I don't see why a display creator file should be much different to any other bit of creative work in copyright respect.

At the moment there is no way of creating a protected DC file that can be distributed, the only way of configuring the DC part of the dash is to send the project via Display Creator. This is something that we are looking at as part of another update but even if this work is done it will not be available until the second half of next year.

The only way you can retrieve a Display Creator project from the Dash is if the person who sent the project ticked the box to store a copy of the project on the device (see below)

In addition to this, you can set a password in Dash Manager to stop the user from either changing the DC config or, if one was stored, retrieve the project.

I suppose at least that answers one of the OP's concerns, if they do not want the customer taking the project and distributing it (For money or otherwise) then simply do not store a copy on the dash.
