Displaying Reverse Gear

I have an old "H" style transmission and would like to be able to display "R" when in Reverse. I have wired the reverse lights so a signal can come to the dash (C187) but am at a loss as to how to let that signal change the display.
I thought about a new channel, 'Reverse Light' with conditions to change the Gear channel when voltage was applied, but that channel is generated and can't be used.
Anyone successful in doing this?

You'll need to build a 3D table, where when your reverse lights channel is 0, it uses the existing gear channel, and when the reverse light is one, it supplies -1 to a new gear channel.
