Setting base timing offset

Postby Mickwitchy on Mon Jun 30, 2025 8:22 pm

Hi there,

Has anyone here had any experience with putting a timing light on the r35? I can see a couple of notches on the crank pulley, but I don't see a corresponding mark on the engine to assess timing offset accuracy. What do people normally do with the R35 to set this up?

Cheers,

The factory workshop manual normally has that information. Of course there are many modern engine with no timing marks -- I usually end up dead-stopping the engine and making my own marks to set the correct offset.

Here is a webinar from HP Academy that shows how to find the TDC of the engine.

Thanks, David. Looks like Nissan never really thought it necessary to go into too much detail regarding timing marks. Anything I've ever been able to find omits all useful information which is wild. Now, I'm going to have to buy an aftermarket damper with timing marks, make a pointer, then find mechanical TDC. This is insane lol

Consider just adding a paint mark to your existing crank pulley that lines up with something on the engine block that you can light up with your timing light. Sometimes this is done with the flywheel at the back of the engine.

Since you said your pulley has an existing mark, perhaps you just need to make a pointer from a piece of sheet metal, or welding wire that points to that mark at Top Dead Center.
