Hi everyone,

I am racing a Toyota GT86 in a national entry-level racing series.

So far, I have been using the stock ECU with ECUTEK software, and for data logging I used an AIM data logger. Unfortunately, this logger is no longer available.

From another project, I currently have a MoTeC M150 ECU available.
That project will take some time, so the M150 is not in use at the moment.

My question is:

Is it possible to use the MoTeC M150 only as a data logger, without controlling the engine?
The main focus would be on basic channels such as:
• Engine speed
• Oil temperature
• (and similar standard parameters)

If this is possible, what are the main things I need to consider (e.g. wiring, sensors, CAN communication, configuration)?


I know this is not a typical use case for an M150, but since I already have one available, I would like to use it for logging only. Replacing the OEM ECU hardware is not permitted by the regulations. I am new to the MoTeC environment and would appreciate any guidance.

It can be done, but isn't the recommended option.

Using the M1 as a logger will require splicing into the OEM loom to be able to read the signals from the loom, as there is not the ability in the M1 to read from the OBD port as the AIM logger was most likely doing. Splicing into the loom to do this can lead to changes in the resistance of the wiring and thus changes to the signals interpreted by the M1 and the OEM ECU. Care must be taken if you go down this route to not cause issues like this.
