Marelli GP2 Dash Display CAN messaging

This is a bit of a backward request. I have a couple of GP2 Dallara's with original XAP (MArelli based) steering wheel dash display. My customer wants to retain the original wheel, no bottomless pit of money to rework the wheels with new displays etc, and we need to communicate with the display from an M1. Has anyone reversed engineered the GP2 display to configure the CAN protocol? Neither XAP or Marelli will release the CAN message protocol as this is "GP2 confidential", so we are a bit stuck at the moment.
