M130 using E888 PWM outputs

Postby picasso on Mon Apr 10, 2023 7:01 am

Hi,

I do have a M130 ECU and an E888 where I would like to use the PWM outputs to control the cams on a Ford Duratec 3.5 TI-VCT engine.
My intension was to use the E888 PWM outputs 1/3/5/7, but I'm not able to control either of the PWM ports 3/4 and 7/8 from the M130.
I've tested all the E888 PWM outputs from the M1 Tune, Engine Systems / Auxiliary Outputs tab, and I was only able to operate PWM port 1/2/5/6. The rest of them did not respond.

I'll appreciate any help to get this sorted. I've attached the setup and diagnostic of the E888 from M1 Tune.

Thanks
Rolf

Hi,

Do you have any spare HB, Inj or Ign outputs on the M130? I would use those for control of the VCT system before using the E888 for this. The E888 PMW outputs do not have the resolution that the onboard outputs have.

I'm not sure why you are not able to test the outputs correctly, I'd have to setup an E888 on the test bench to see what is going on. What Firmware are you using in the M1?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.
I'm running Firmware RDS Geartronics GCU-P (M130)
Firmware version 01.01.0002
System Version 01.04.00.0030

I only have 3 HB's left, thats why I decided to go for the E888 PWM's.
I thought that by using the E888 PWM high speed output 1/3/5/7 would give me sufficient resolution.

I do however have 2 each Inj and Ign outputs on the M130 left, but was not sure if they could handle the current to the VCT solenoids.

Hi Rolf,

The LS IGN and LS INJ can handle the low side switched current needed to drive a standard Cam Solenoid. You do need to fit recirculation diodes to the loom if you are using these outputs to control solenoids. The HB outputs can handle higher current draws, and also have internal recirculation diodes.

Thanks Dean,

so you would advice me to use the 3 available HB's and then either of the inj or ign outputs?
If so, whats preferable of the inj or ign outputs, and how is the recirculation diodes to be wired.

Hi Rolf,

How many cams are you driving? If it is one or two I would use the HB outputs first.

Hi Dean,

it's 4 cams I need to drive, so I'm one HB short. That's why I it would have been perfect for me to use the 4 high speed PWM outputs in the E888.
It's also a cabling issue, as I 'll have to break up my loom for the M130 to acceess the ouputs there.
I'll look into it to see what I decide.
Did you manage to set up an E888 for a bench test to check if you get the same result as me regarding the missing PWM outputs.

Hi Rolf,

What else do you have on the HB's?

I haven't been able to test it yet.

Hi Dean,

HB 1 & 2 is used for the throttle servo and HB 6 was set to Auxillary Output 1. But looking into it this output is not in use to anything. I was just looking at the Firmware wiring table and it showed HB 1, 2 and 6 was in use.
It is not me that initially configured the ECU or made the loom so I didn't have all the details.

Then I'll have four available HB outputs for the cams in the M130.
Now I'll just have to make sure the wiring can handle the additional current for the four solenoids.
What wire gauge is recommended for operating each of the cam solenoids?

Hi Rolf,

Unless there is a long distance between the M! and the solenoids, I typically use 20G for the Cam Solenoids on the wiring looms that I do. It is possible to use 22G for them as well, based off of the testing that I have done on the solenoids as the ones that I have dealt with all drew less than 2A to operate.
