Diesel tuning

Diesel engines are new for me.
In terms of where to tune for lambda and EGT, where does one start in finding where to target these values?
And secondly if one ignores power and focuses on BSFC, if one runs excess boost is that generally helpful for EGT, BSCF, and emissions?
Or is there some region where the exhaust will start surging, for instance can the high boost translate into a lowering of turbo RPM. It seems unlikely, but what danger or concerns should one have with adjusting the wastegate for higher boost? Or underfueling for wide open throttle?
Are there any places, people or tuners that can help with turbo theory?
And lastly... I have a PLM, but am looking for what specific sensor should be used for high lambda... or do I not any lambda number over 1.6?
