GPS SDL M400 logging

I am trying to log gps data with my M400. Blackline gps is plugged into SDL (it is a display only). I am getting the gps data into SDL but not sure how to get the data into the ECU. Is there somewhere to set it to transmit over CAN? Just a bit stumped.

The M400 will only receive GPS information via its RS232 input. It is possible to use your Blackline unit but the BAUD will have to be re-programmed to suit the ECU options. You can send some channels to the ECU from the dash via the CAN bus but not GPS latitude or longitude.

To quote from the release notes:

Version 3.51U2 Release - 25th June 2009

Including:

Component Version Date
ECU Manager (WinEMP.exe) 3.5.1.16 15 May 2009
ECU Firmware (Hex) 3.51U 12 May 2009

Changes in this release:
General Changes
Ability to receieve GPS information via RS232. (Adjust | General Setup | Communications | RS232 Telemetry Setup: "Baud Rate" must be configured to match GPS, "Data Set" must be turned off)

Currently only tested against 5Hz Garmin GPS
GPS should only transmit GGA and RMC NMEA sentences
Added channels for info received via GPS (Latitude, Longitude, Time, Speed, Altitude, etc.)

Yea we coudn't find a way to transmit anything from the SDL to the M400, let alone GPS info. I was just hoping to save the expense of enabling the logging on the SDL as an interim measure. We got the GPS to function with laptimes coming up on the dash but not logged.

MoTeC makes a STC (Serial to CAN).
And it actually does convert the serial to CAN.
I use one as my RS232 is occupied with something else.

With the STC you can route GPS anywhere where CAN goes.

Please note that, while an STC does indeed convert from serial to CAN, it will not help in getting GPS information into a M400 as the ECU can only accept GPS information input via RS232.

The best solution for low cost would be to wire the GPS RS232 output directly into the M400 RS232 input and get the BAUD rate reset on the GPS unit.

The best solution for logging memory would be to buy a logging option for the dash as 512kb won't last long.

Hi Alan

I had the Idear to split the rs232 RX signal from my GPS and go to both, ADL and M800, Is this posible? Becaus at some times it is intersting to see die GPS corodinates in the M800 logging.

regards Thorsten

I doubt that the rs232-rx (on the GPS) is commanded by any unit, and I think it just broadcasts non-stop.
So you will only need the rs232-tx (from the GPS) and ground going to both.
