GPS & M800 oem

Postby premier on Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:58 pm

Good morning all,
I have an M800 oem with advance tuning and logging, (1mb standard) for a Evo 8MR.

My question is can i add a GPS aerial and plug straight into the ecu as i do not run a motec dash and it seems from the info i have read that you need a dash?
I only what to run it for the logging side of things as a track map and times will be useful on track days ;) I don't need live timing in the car, just for analysing after.

Many thanks Ady

Pin 87 on the OEM connector can be set up for RS 232 or TX via links on the OEM adaptor board

You need the channel lap distance to draw a track map.....and therefore a beacon.
The ECU will not do beacons from GPS, Only SDL, ADL2, ADL3 will do GPS Beacons............for now........ Motec?

The 5Hz garmin, which i suppose you are referring to, is not just an aerial, its a GPS unit that outputs data via RS232.
With the GPS connected to the RS232 RX pin on your ECU you will be able to see all the GPS data and also use it in your ECU config. Very useful in a 4wd setup.

Thanks for the replies; I’ve been having a think about it over the week end as I use a Racelogic Performance box too.
The fact that the Motec gps (Garmin) will not draw the track map without a dash is poor? :( , coupled with the fact I can only have 1mb logging is not really enough.

I think I’ll stick with the performance box as they’ve just brought out a add on module to plug in for 1 digital rmp channel and 4 analogue channels and that logs at (20Hz) on top of the normal logging, it’s also logged to a card (516mb) so will be a much cheeper option.

Thanks again for the replys.

The ECU can draw a trackmap (Actually I2 does it, you just need to give it the right info)

YOu just need a beacon. Until now the ECU will not read a beacon from the GPS. Remember that the GPS to ECU function is still very new. Maybe itll be done in the future?

If you have a switch output out of your Racebox, wire it into a digital input to trigger a beacon in the ECU. This way you can have a trackmap, laptimes etc...
