M800 and RB26 Skyline igniter box problem

Postby Chris Wilson on Thu May 07, 2009 9:53 pm

Whole set up is new, everything is working EXCEPT the spark side. Using new coils WITHOUT built in igniters, and new igniter box I have tried everything I can think of to get a spark. i have tried different coils and a known good used igniter. Jury rigging the loom to run used Nissan RB26 coils with a built in igniter to bypass the separate igniter box I get a perfect spark on all cylinders. Having bought a new igniter and new coils though, it's very frustrating not being able to get them to work. Will the M800 run the coils WITHOUT built in igniter circuitry directly? Thanks. BTW, igniter = amplifier = switching box, not sure what the correct name is :)

Is the Igniter Inductive or CDi ?

If it's different to the RB26 coils (inductive?) you'll need to change the ignition type in M800 setup

It's all stock Nissan stuff. Stock coils, stock amplifier, and inductive AFAIK. Each coil has a battery positive feed, a ground, and a wire back to one of 6 Motec outputs via the amplifier box. Ignition is set to type 1. I have spoken to two people here in the UK running an M800 on a Skyline engine, but they both run the R34 type coils, which have the amplifier built into each coil, like the RB25 ones I successfully tried. I COULD hack the loom and run the used RB25 self amplified coils, but I am annoyed I can't fathom out why the separate amplifier set up won't work!!! ;)

Chris have you got it sorted yet? If not i should be able to help you sort it out as i have a lot of experience with Motec's in all GTR models bar R35..

I have *just* fathomed this out, but thanks for the offer. The cause was my using an RB25 engine loom (the car is an R33 GTS-t that originally had an RB25DET engine in it, of course), with an RB26 engine and igniter. It appears the RB25 igniter has the larger and smaller loom plug sockets transposed, so my loom combination plugs an RB26 igniter in back to front... I swapped the small RB25 engine loom side igniter plug for the larger RB26 one, and got an RB26 coil loom, with the small igniter connector, and all is resolved. Luckily I did't *ugger the 2 igniters I have, either, nor the Motec... Finally it all works and the engine can meet the dyno soon. Thanks again. BTW, is there a way to check the idle control valve (stock Nissan) operation and the turbo boost control valve (Delco 3 port) from any diagnostics on the ECU?

Hi Chris,
Just to confirm, no, none of our ECUs will run a coil directly, you must always have an ignition amplifier/module/transistor (whatever you want to call it).

If you have setup the outputs for idle and boost you will be able to go into the Test Outputs section of the software, you should be able to hear them clicking away.

Fitting an M600 + CDI8 on a RB26.

1. What coils would you recommend I run with this combination?
2. Has anyone tried running stock coils driven by a CDI?

Thanks

I'd like an answer to this question also. I too have an RB26, though I am running a CDI4 (3channels in Wasted Spark) but am currently running dual outlet coils with leads to the plugs (very ugly)..

I am looking for a Coil on Plug solution.. I understand using an Inductive coil is possible and extends the duration of the spark somewhat.. but perhaps it is better to run a 'proper' CDI coil and multi-spark..?

Coils on my list are Denso COPS, AEM, WeaponX. Or, can I run the Standard Nissan Coils and get away with it??

Suggestions on what is best anyone?
