Dwell times and settings for vw coils.

Postby Haffa on Sat Jul 01, 2023 4:05 am

Hi.
I have a m130 and is trying to figure out the dwell time and other settings of the coils we have.
The coils are "R 04 01S00400". I tried to measure it with a oscilloscope but my power supply was not able to give enough current. So i was hoping someone here knows the times.
The engine has been setup by someone else, and we have had problems getting it to run well and control it as we expected, so when i ran through the setup we found settings that was not correct, and currently the coil is set as
"Audi VW 06E 905 115E.1.0" and that is not the coils that are physically in the car.
I have attached a picture of our coils.

Hi,

I do not have a calibration that matches any of those part numbers. Looking at the dwell curve for the AUDI coils that you are using, they have a quite short dwell time in the 12V ~ 14V range, so it may be that the coils that you are using are not getting enough dwell to generate their full capacity. This is also good news, as the short dwell will most likely have not damaged the coils.

We can calibrate the coils, this is organised through an Approved MoTeC Dealer who will send the coils to us with the appropriate paperwork.

Many VAG ignition coils work the same way.
In the attached picture, a few different models are compared.
Measured at 14V.

Here is the same picture, if the attachment is not fully visible.

And this is probably the same coil that you are using.

odd it says secondary current ?

Would you not typically measure the current drawn into the primary 12v side ?

Some of them are pulling quite a bit, and still don't seem to be saturating ?

Oh. Upper curves are secondary currents and bottom lines are primaries.

All are close to saturation.
Here is this -100S at 4ms Dwell.
