Alternative ignition amplifiers (igniters) ?

Postby Chris Wilson on Sat Jul 10, 2010 6:12 am

I am very happy with my newly installed M800 on my Skyline 6 cylinder turbo RB26DETT engine, but both on the dyno, mapping, then twice on track days I have had an intermittent misfire. Like all very intermittent problems it was not too easy to pin down, but yesterday I lost number 5 cylinder all together for a while, no spark. Swapped coils, spark returned, thought it was a coil, but then I lose the same cylinder spark again. Fiddled with the coil pack loom, spark came back. Bought and fitted new loom, seemed OK, but again returned after a cold start. Coil packs are brand new, as is ignition amp (stock Nissan). Today I managed to discover that at certain temperatures tapping the amplifier results in number 5 spark going away. Tried a known good used amp and it's been fine all day and this evening. I reckon it's a faulty / damaged amplifier. Nissan charge a lot for them, and even on stock engines they apparently give their share of trouble. My question (finally...:)) is can I replace the amp by another make or type, making up a custom loom isn't an issue? I can't really afford a full CDI set up. I don't mind changing the coil on plug set up either, if necessary. Track and dyno time is expensive, I hate wondering if a small box is going to play up and would rather substitute something known to be bullet proof, which to me often spells BOSCH :) Any tips? Thanks.

Bosch amps are widely used and not expensive.

Either 3x 0227-100-200 2 channel amps
Or 2x 0227-100-209 3 channel amps
