Which PDM??? Please Help.

Postby dwrights on Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:00 pm

Hello,

Looking for a bit of advice.......

I'm currently building a Lancia Integrale Rally car which is running an M800 and a Sport Dash. The engine loom is already made and the engine/dash side of things is sorted.

The car now needs all the road going ancillarys wiring up. I want to use the Motec PDM system but can't decide which one to choose.

Here is a list of the parts which will need power.

internal/map light

12v supply for in car things like Sat Nav etc

Shift light

HID headlamps

sidelamps

main beams

indicators

hazard warning lights

fog lights

brake lights

Reversing light (if you want one, not MOT requirement I think)

internal dash lamps for main beam, indicators, and alternator charge

Windscreen wipers and windscreen washer pump

electric windows

Ignition off/on/start

fused supply for engine loom switched by ignition switch

Fused supply for dash switched by ignition switch

Fused supply feed for fuel level sensor and necessary wires in loom to operate

fused supply for speedo ecu

lighting supply for dash lights on Tacho, fuel level guage and Motec (ie 12v switched feed that comes on when sidelights or headlights on.

Relay controlled supply for rad fan (trigger feed from this to come from the Motec Dash as opposed to thermo switch)

Relay supply for chargecooler pump (triger feed from Motec Dash as above)

High current relay supply for main fuel pump to be controlled by Motec ECU with feed from existing engine loom. Lower current relay supply for pair of lift pumps with relay control from Engine ECU loom.

alternator exciter feed circuit

heated front and rear screens

The list is quite a large one but I feel that the car would benefit from the Motec PDM system.

Thanks in advance,

David.

My advice would be buy the one with more I/O than you need as your bound to want to add something in the future.

Set up a spreadsheet with all your I/Os and do some planning on what goes where before you order.
PDM30 is good value and you can run more than one PDM if 30 or 32 outputs are not enough.

Thanks for the replies Gents.

I take it the PDM 15 and PDM 30 are the most recent offerings from Motec and the 16 and 32 PDM's are being fazed out? Is this correct?

15 and 30 use the cheaper connectors, I'll agree with the guys factor in some "spares" I/O's.

I bought 2x PDM15's and could use more.

Well I have decided on a PDM30....I think?

The price seems good from my dealer. One question I have though is..........My car is running an M800 and a Sport dash. Would the PDM 32 be better suited to my application or should I just buy the PDM30 and be happy?

High end option:
16 and 32
Autosport connectors

lower end option
15 and 30

Low end does not do the 15 and 30 justice. They are the same as the 16 and 32 far as functionality goes, just the casing and connectors and number of out and inputs are different. The connectors on the 15 and 30 is the same as on your M800. Power supply to the 15 and 30 is a normal stud on the casing instead of a very expensive Autosport connector. Check the Motec website for details and differences.

If you are going to exceed a continuous 100A, put 2 PDM 15s in
This is very unlikely though....

If you have two PDM15's rather than one PDM30 then you have the option of locating them in different places. From your list one possibility would be one at the front (engine stuff, rad fans, charge cooler etc), and one one under the dash (the rest). That might tidy up the wiring with just a 12V and CAN running from the dash to the front PDM.
