CAN communication with AIM Dash

Postby Ironhead on Mon Oct 14, 2019 7:11 am

Please try to be patient with my ignorance....

I am trying to make my PDM30 communicate via CAN with an AIM MXS dash. I was told by AIM support that the dash was configured to communicate with the PDM. I have checked the CAN wiring about 10X and know that part is correct, but the two devices just aren't talking...

So should the AIM dash-PDM CAN connection just be a matter of plugging the devices into the CAN, or do I still need to configure the CAN input/output in the PDM for them to communicate? I have watched the Motec webinar about CAN configuring the PDM about 10 times...it is not "quite" Greek to me...but I would be lying if I said I truly understand it.

Any help or pointing me to other resources would be HUGE. TIA.

Yes, the PDM needs to be configured to send CAN status messages. The MXS has two CAN busses, are you sure you are connected and configured in RaceStudio3 for the correct CAN bus? Since you have a PDM, you will also have a MoTeC UTC (USB-to-CAN) adapter for configuring. This can be used with the CAN Inspector software (installed as part of the utilities package) to verify that packets are actually making it onto the CAN bus.

I think so, I have the ECU going to Can1 and the PDM to Can2 on the MXS, at the suggestion of AIM support. The PDM "template" shows up in RS3, just no data coming to it.

I am not usually a complete idiot, but I don't know what it is, the guidance in the Motec webinar is just not sinking in with me. Part of the problem is that it seems like the PDM manager software has evolved a bit since the webinar was made, and it is a bit different than the version I am using. Do you know of any other information resources on configuring the CAN in the PDM?

Thanks!

Hi,

The PDM CAN Outputs needs to have the Standard Messages enabled, this is done in PDM Manager and setting the Standard Messages Properties to the following.

Thank you Mr. Dean.

Near as I can tell however, that is exactly how mine is configured, and I am getting nothing. I attached my configuration file, if you get a chance I would hugely appreciate it if you can see if anything is amiss there.

Thanks Again.

Hi,

That config looks ok, As David suggested, download the MoTeC utilities from here and run CAN inspector and see if there is any CAN messaging being transmitted on the 500 address range. If there is then there is an issue with the Aim setup.

You guys nailed it once again. The CAN utility showed indeed that the PDM was sending out data on the bus, which helped me pinpoint a problem with the AIM setup. All is well now.

Thanks again, hugely appreciated.
