Windscreen wiper shunt motor wiring

Postby bdinnerv on Fri May 17, 2019 6:10 pm

Hi all,

Can anyone assist with the wiring of a shunt motor windscreen wiper for use with a PDM?

I have the wiring diagram for the wiper as follows:

Image

Where:
31 is earth
53 is 12v / "Wiper motor input"
53a is Wiper Self Park
53b is Wiper Shunt Winding

And I am not 100% sure what 31B is (it runs back to the wiper relay)?

How would you go about the physical wiring of this setup to a PDM?

Cheers,

Ben

Here are my thoughts:

31B is the common for the switch. I would connect that to ground, then use either 31 or 53A to connect to one of the PDM inputs to use as a park signal (test to figure which one closes when the motor is in the park position).

Connect the low-speed (either 53B or 53) to the PDM output 9 (which is special because it can handle the voltage generated when the high-speed is active). The other power will will of course control the high-speed operation.

The logic for parking has been posted here previously.

I think you will find this detailed in the PDM User Manual -- page 6-10. This is available in the PDM Manager under the Help menu.

Thanks for the response David.

Here is a pic of the entire circuit diagram for the wipers (and some other things)

My main query is around the shunt motor part of it. My understanding is that shunt motors have no magnets and the required magnetic field is actually generated by another coil winding - the shunt winding? If that is so, then does that winding also need power along with the regular winding(s) or am I over-complicating things here.

Most wiring diagrams I see for wipers have 4 circuits, and this one has 5, which is leading to my questions.
