PDM mounting

Postby CNDat510 on Thu Jun 15, 2017 8:22 am

Does anyone see a problem with mounting a PDM15 and M130 "back to back", with a 1/4" grooved aluminum plate between the two components?

My car is a sleeper, and I'm trying to find a way to hide the PDM and M130 in plain site. I'm going hide them behind the OEM speaker grill on the interior passenger-side firewall.

I was thinking of adding a low-speed fan on the bottom of the mount to assist with some airflow.

Yea or nay?

From a heat point of view you wont have any issues mounting it like that, unless your have extremely high ambient temperatures (ie more than 70-80 deg C). Don't bother with the fan it won't make any useful difference.

A couple of other observations:

1 - You shouldn't mount any vehicle electronics with the connectors facing upwards. Condensation or and any water can run down the wiring and then pool on the top of the connector/case. It will eventually work its way into the device with heat cycling. You should mount them with the connectors facing down to reduce the chance of this happening.

2 - It is always preferable to have some form of damping/rubber mounting as part of you mounting solution to reduce the vibration seen by the electronic components.

Point 2 throws up a question for my build. I have not included any rubber mounting but could do if required, however my main electronics are mounted on an approx 500 X 300 mm alloy sheet panel which is mounted on the four corners by one M5 bolt in each. Do you reckon the size and relative thinness of the sheet would effectively damp out vibration from the car? I coulc probably space the sheet out on rubber blocks if required but would prefer to keep my PDM and ECU hard mounted to it if I can.

It is always recommended to add some sort of soft mounting especially in vehicles with very high vibration (such as ones with hard mounted engines).

In saying that, plenty of people hard mount our ECUs/PDMs etc and never have any issues. The right level and frequency of vibration will eventually kill any electronics so we always recommend rubber mounting where possible to reduce the chance of damage. Whether your plate is enough to help with the damping is impossible to say.

Mine is relatively low vibration for a race car but I might take it as insurance and grab some rubber isolators and mount the whole electronics panel on them.

Great, thank for the input. I'll make those corrections!
