wiring in can wires

Postby shrive81 on Sat Mar 18, 2017 4:00 pm

OK so I finally got my program for the two PDM 15's and the 15 key keypad done and now I am onto the wiring side of it.. I have the UTC and UTC connector for the dash and read the wiring instructions for that but I am confused on where it says the end of the can bus needs a 100R terminating resistor at the end of each can bus... Maybe I am stupid but not understanding what this is and do I wire it between the two can bus wires connecting them together or do they each get one.. All of the can bus and PDM's are going to be in the dash together and will have minimal legnths so not sure if I have to do this on each end or how the can bus wiring is supposed to connect... any help would be awesome I just have never had to wire can bus

The resistor goes between the CAN Hi and CAN Lo wires. In a recent installion I did, my CAN bus started with an LTC that I put the terminating resistor into the back of the DTM connector, the CAN wires then were spliced to the CAN connection on the C125 dash (I could use a splice since the distance of the dash connector branch was less than 18 inches), the CAN wiring continued to near the PDM and M1 ECU, which were each spliced in, then continued to the center console where I spliced in the Keypad, and it ended at the UTC bulkhead connector where I had another terminating resistor soldered on the back of the 5-pin Bullhead connector.

I bet something similar would work for you.

BTW, for bench testing, the UTC has a terminating resistor in it, and you can just wire the Bulkhead connector directly to a dash, PDM, LTC, etc and they will work and communicate as long as the UTC is connnected. I have also found cars wired with too many CAN terminating resistors, and they will stop working when the UTC is attached - I need to disconnect the (non MoTeC) ECU just to config the ADL dash (and remove the UTC for dash to ECU Comms to work)

Ok so something like this? The leg lengths are the max length as they will probably be shorter

Any electronics store should carry them, you usually buy 10 of them for a few dollars.

I was just searching around and noticed that they sell a duestch connector DTM06-2S-EP10 it is a two place connector with a built in 120ohm resistor built into it. Would this work as a can termination. Seems like a clean way to terminate the can wires. Basically bring your two can wire into a male DTM 2p and then attach the DTM06-2S-EP10 and you that will terminate with the resistor...

Yes,

They can be used as a neat and clean solution.
