Upload configuration to Expanders

With a VIM (or an E888 or E816 for that matter), does uploading the configuration to the expander happen through the ACL->expander, or does one need to connect directly to the expander?

VIM -> With ACL and ADL3, the configuration is sent to the device via the ACL/ADL3 manager application. There is no need to directly connect to it.
E888 -> there is no configuration to send. It always sends all channels at the prescribed update rate, and looks at particular CAN messages to determine what to do with its outputs..
