SDL connector pin has a broken wire

Hey.

One my signal wires has broken off inside my main connector that plugs into my SDL. There is nothing sticking out to solder the wire too, and I have tried pushing the pin back out but it doesn't seem to want to budge.

Is there a special tool, or some special technique to remove a pin?

Special tool, and green and white plastic job to get them out and put them in.
You will probably want to go somewhere and have the new pin crimped onto the wire rather than solder it.
Might need some strain relief or address the reason why it broke in the first place.
Was it soldered, just vibration?

I went down to the local Motec dealer and they had a spare one of those plastic tools that they sold me, so I have now managed to remove the pin. Yes it was soldered, and I suspect it was being pulled a little too tight so I have lengthened that wire a little bit so it shouldn't happen again :D

I am pretty sure that:
1) It is better crimped than soldered.
2) The stress at the end of the solder joint tends to concentrate the force/strain and that is were they fail.

Your results may vary.

I would suggest to you that you should never solder wires onto those millspec pins.

Wire breakage would be a very common result of doing this.

You should (must) crimp the millspec pins, and should probably crimp all electrical pins on a race car.

Got the same advice from Steve T and Mark and haven't had a single issue since I bought the crimper.

those Mil spec pins and the Deustch autosport connectors are based on the Mil-DTL-38999 specification.

NEVER EVER SOLDER the pins,unless specifically and EXPLICITLY directed to. The 38999 series was never designed around soldering, hence no strain relief. They are to be crimped and only crimped.

Being a defence member and dealing with this stuff often, most of the pins at work are soldered. There just is a set way to solder them that conforms to milspec standards and the old sh*t at work has no stress relief. It has to be done so that the solder doesn't "wick" up the leads. begins to be a real pain dealing with 240mm2 cable as an oxy is the only way to do it fast enough.
