ADL backlight

Hi had some problems recently with an old ADL and its backlight(serial 1300)
The backlight unit is wired to a 100 ohm variable resistor.
Booted up but then backlight went dead, no variation on pot.
Never happened before suspect open circuit on the wiring but have not done all checks yet.
a day later and booted okay with backlight.

Do these units ever intermittently fail?
I know its not a spring chicken!

The ADL will have a external back light high voltage power supply.
Check the wiring from it to the ADL.
