ADL 1st Gen

Hi, I have the opportunity to purchase an ADL8-BL. I realise that this is an older model but comes with pro-logging. I currently have a Race Technology Dash2 which communicates fine with my M880 and seems to generally work OK. I have some questions....

1. My M880 has logging enabled. Is this as good/better/worse than the ADL logging?? Would I see any benefit in using the ADL logging instead?
2. Is the ADL still a 'good' bit of kit??
3. Can I still get documentation, pinout diagrams etc from Motec
4. Despite being discontinued, is there still support for it?

I like the idea of having a Motec dash to compliment my M880 and PDM but it IS a bit older and my current setup works.

And original ADL with Prologging will work with the latest I2 Pro software. The only real downside to the earlier dashes is the CAN bus is more limited - fewer devices can be connected, no built in support for the CAN SLM or Video Sync module, and it only works at 1Mbit - but if you just have an M880 it will be fine. The original ADL also doesn't have built-in GPS support for lap timing.

1) I think you will find ADL w/Pro logging to be better, but there is still a place for ECU logging as you can easily add channels that aren't normally sent over the CAN bus.

2) Yes, I think the ADL1 is still a "good bit of kit"! BTW for anyone looking I have a couple of ADL1s with 30 & 50 I/O enabled, all memory and pro logging, contact me for a good deal.

3) Pinout documentation is found in the under Help in the MoTeC Dash Manager (you should download the latest version).

4) The only failure we've ever had in nearly 20 years of experience with the ADL, is if you short the 12V power through the 0V pins, you will blow a trace on the logic board. Our US MoTeC distributor can fix this quickly and the cost if fair. I'm sure the UK/EU support is probably similar.

Thanks David.
Tried to send you a PM regarding the ADL's you have for sale but it seems they have failed. Could you PM me a price for them please?

I have set up a CAN bus which currently has M880, PDM30, 15-way CAN Keypad and Dash2. My current dash2 has built in shift lights but if I buy ADL and SLM, can my M880 drive the SLM via CAN if the ADL cannot???

I have connected an L-5 GPS unit to the ECU in the hope of making track maps...would there be any benefit to sending the GPS data to ADL or just keep it in the ECU??

You may just want to make your own simple shift light setup, using the ADL1 Auxillary Outputs. Yes, it's not multi-colored like the SLM, but you can still control the brightness per LED, and have each LED indicate more than one thing (like brake pressure as well as engine RPM), or wheel lockup.

There are CAN templates to allow some control of the SLM from the ADL, it's been a long time since I explored that.

I think the ADL1 will be a bit challenged dealing with GPS data (32 vs. 16 bit numbers), but it is possible to log the channels, then combine them in I2 Pro to draw track maps. What neither your M880 or the ADL1 can do is generate a virtual beacon (ie. lap timing) from the GPS data on the fly. You could still break the data into laps in I2 Pro.

I did get your PM, and I've replied. For anyone else interested, I only wish to sell used MoTeC ADLs in the USA so they can be properly supported.
