Hey

I have connected the ECU to the laptop, the Motec is currently installed and currently operational in the car, I want to tune it... press 'Open ECU' and am told 'Enter Password'.

Is there an option to open the ECU to tune it or to put new files in? An option that doesn't include having to send it back, get it wiped and having no file?

if the ECU is asking for a passowrd. You need the password. Get it from the tuner that tuned it. It is not that difficult. Now if you bought it used. Hope you verified that it is not "hot".
